For the revision itself, add Quizlet for flashcards or Thea for practice tests built from your own course material.

How to choose a study app

Studying has three parts: planning what to study, revising it, and staying focused while you do. No single app does all three well, so most students combine two.

  • If you keep missing deadlines, start with a planner: My Study Life if your life revolves around a class timetable, Structured if you want to block out every hour of the day.
  • If you have an exam with a fixed date, Knowunity (for SAT, ACT and AP) or Easy Study (for any subject list) will spread topics across the days you have left. For SAT-specific prep, see our SAT prep apps page.
  • If you need to memorize facts and vocabulary, use flashcards with spaced repetition. Quizlet is the best known, and our flashcard apps and Quizlet alternatives pages compare cheaper and more private options.
  • If you understand the material but freeze in tests, Thea's timed practice tests are the closest thing here to a mock exam.
  • If your phone is the problem, StudyBreak blocks apps during study sessions. Our guide to focus timer apps compares Forest, Flora and other Pomodoro timers.
  • If you are on a strict budget, Structured's free tier and Gizmo's free flashcards cost nothing, and Easy Study's paid plan is listed at $2.99 a month.

Good notes make every one of these apps work better. Our comparison of note-taking apps for students covers where to write them.

My Study Life is a planner built around the school or college timetable. You enter your classes once, including weekly or rotating schedules, then attach homework, tasks with subtasks and deadlines, and exams. The description adds grade tracking toward a target GPA, an exam study planner with reminders spread over time, a built-in focus timer, and "Scout," an AI study coach that helps plan your week. The screenshots show a dashboard with the day's classes and counts of exams and tasks due, plus a feature grid: calendar, homework, repeated tasks, reminders, grade tracking, Pomodoro timer and widgets on iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch.

The app is free to download. The description lists MyStudyLife+ at $6.99 a month or $39.99 a year, and Family Connect plans from $9.99 a month (1 student) to $119.99 a year (3 to 5 students), on the US App Store in November 2026.

Limits: the listing does not say which features need MyStudyLife+. The age label notes advertising, and the privacy label declares tracking through location, user content, identifiers and usage data. The app interface is English only. It plans your studying but does not help you revise, so pair it with a flashcard or practice-test app.

Structured is a general day planner that shows your tasks and events on a visual timeline, which suits time blocking study sessions. The description lists the free features plainly: the drag-and-drop timeline, an inbox for quick capture, sync across iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch and Mac, subtasks with notes, a Pomodoro focus timer with Live Activities, and widgets. It also mentions a dyslexia-friendly font and VoiceOver support. The screenshots show a week strip and a timeline of colored, icon-tagged blocks for a morning routine.

Structured Pro adds calendar and Reminders integration, recurring tasks, AI day planning, and "Replan," which moves missed tasks. On the US App Store in November 2026, Pro is listed at $2.99 to $7.99 monthly, $9.99 to $49.99 yearly, and $99.99 for a lifetime item.

Limits: it is not built for school. There is no timetable, grade or exam view, and recurring tasks are a Pro feature, so a weekly class schedule is awkward on the free tier. The privacy label declares no tracking and links contact info and user content to you.

Quizlet turns material into study sets: type, paste or upload notes and it builds flashcards and study guides, or record a lecture and it generates them from the audio. You then study with flashcards, "Learn" (adaptive practice), practice tests, spaced repetition and "Charms," a puzzle game made from your own sets. The description also mentions "Ask Quizlet" for explanations and podcasts generated from your notes. The screenshots show a math flashcard with a "Got it!" swipe and an AI study guide on cells and mitosis.

On the US App Store in November 2026, Quizlet Plus is listed at $9.99 and $44.99, with Plus Unlimited and Quizlet Go at $44.99. The description says Plus is sold as a monthly or annual subscription.

Limits: the listing does not say which study modes are limited without Plus. The privacy label declares tracking across 7 data types, including location, purchases and search history, the most of any app on this page. If that concerns you, our Quizlet alternatives page lists options with lighter privacy labels.

Knowunity organizes everything around an exam plan. You give it your test date and topics, and the description says it maps out what to do each day, fitting study around your class timetable and adapting as the date gets closer. Inside the plan are flashcards, quizzes, summaries, mock exams and "voice recall," where you answer out loud and the app checks you. It covers SAT, ACT and AP along with general school subjects. The screenshots focus on its AI chat, which explains mitosis with a diagram.

The developer says the core tools are free. On the US App Store in November 2026, Knowunity Pro is listed at $8.49, $9.99, $15.99 and $49.99, without billing periods in the names.

Limits: the age label is 13+ and notes advertising, messaging, user-generated content and social features. The privacy label declares tracking through usage data. It also offers photo-based homework help, which gives you answers; use the plan and recall features if your goal is to learn the material.

Thea builds study material from what you upload: handwritten notes, PDFs, lecture videos or a YouTube link. The description lists adaptive questions that target weak spots, flashcards with spaced repetition and game modes, summaries, downloadable study guides, and practice tests that simulate exam conditions. It supports over 80 languages and works on phone, tablet and computer. The screenshots show a multiple-choice question on bone matrix with a level indicator, and a test builder with a time limit, question counts and a difficulty slider.

On the US App Store in November 2026, Thea is listed at $12.00 monthly or $48.00 yearly.

Limits: the listing does not say what you can do without paying. Thea launched in March 2025 and has about 2,600 ratings, far fewer than Quizlet. The privacy label declares no tracking but links 6 data types to you, including location. AI-generated questions can contain mistakes, so check them against your course material.

Gizmo turns imported material into quizzes and flashcards. Its "Magic Import," shown in the screenshots, accepts a photo, PDF, notes, PowerPoint, a YouTube link, a recorded lecture, or decks from Quizlet and Anki. Reviews use spaced repetition and active recall, and the description mentions over 1,000,000 public flashcard decks, leaderboards and study games. The screenshots show a cell biology matching question with keys, hearts and XP counters, like a game.

The description lists "free flashcards." On the US App Store in November 2026, Gizmo Unlimited is listed at $6.99 to $154.99, and coin packs at $1.99 to $9.99.

Limits: the listing does not say what Unlimited adds, and the hearts and coins suggest a game economy that may limit free play. The app interface is English only, and it is rated 13+. The privacy label declares no tracking but links location and contacts to you. For more flashcard apps, see our flashcard comparison.

StudyBreak is a study timer with an app blocker. You choose a study-to-break ratio, start the timer, and the apps you picked stay locked until your break. If you study past the timer, the description says the extra break time is banked for later. It tracks study hours and focus rate, and adds a study planner that builds a schedule from your syllabus and a tool that turns PDFs into audio. It runs on iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple Watch. The screenshots show weekly stats with daily grades and a home screen where blocked apps show a "Time Allowance" limit.

The price list includes a one-time "Unlimited +" unlock at $4.99, Premium at $34.99 (annual, per the item name), and several notebook and planner packs from $1.99 to $44.99, on the US App Store in November 2026.

Limits: with about 199 ratings, there is little public feedback, and the price list is hard to read. Study reminders and editing past sessions are Premium features. The privacy label declares no tracking and no data linked to you.

Easy Study does one thing: it builds a study rotation. You enter your subjects and how many you want to study each day, and the app creates a plan organized in cycles so each subject comes back for review. You can add activities to each session, see hours studied by day, week and month, and get notifications for today's subjects. The screenshots show a "Today" agenda with color-coded subjects, activities completed and study time, and a week view of sessions.

The description says Easy Study Plus adds a revision assistant, goals, backup and reminders, at $2.99 monthly, $14.99 semiannually or $26.99 annually.

Limits: the age label notes advertising and the privacy label declares tracking through identifiers. The last update was in January 2026, and the screenshots carry dates from December 2022. It has no flashcards or quizzes, so it only covers the planning side.

What we left out

  • Gauth: a homework-answer app with step-by-step solutions and expert help. It can explain a problem, but it is built to give answers rather than to plan or review, so it does not fit a study routine.
  • Turbo AI: similar to Thea (notes, quizzes and flashcards from uploads), but with an English-only interface and tracking declared through identifiers and usage data.
  • Pearson+: useful only if your course uses Pearson eTextbooks, since you sign in with your Pearson+ account.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best app for studying?

For most students, My Study Life for planning plus a revision app such as Quizlet or Thea. No app on this page plans, revises and blocks distractions equally well. If you can only install one, pick the one that matches your weak spot: deadlines (My Study Life), memorizing (Quizlet) or phone distraction (StudyBreak).

What is the best free study app?

Structured has the clearest free tier: the listing names the timeline, inbox, cross-device sync and Pomodoro timer as free, and declares no tracking. Knowunity says its core tools are free but shows ads, and Gizmo lists free flashcards. Our flashcard apps page includes fully free review tools.

Why are homework-answer apps not on this list?

Apps like Gauth are built to solve a problem from a photo. They can help when you are stuck, but they do not plan your revision or test your memory, and copying answers does not prepare you for an exam. Knowunity includes photo homework help, but we picked it for its exam plan and recall features.

Are AI study apps worth paying for?

They save time turning notes into questions, but they cost real money: Thea is listed at $48 a year and Gizmo Unlimited goes up to $154.99. Try the free part first, and check AI-generated questions against your notes, since they can be wrong. If you only need flashcards, a free flashcard app may be enough.

What is a good study planner app for college?

My Study Life handles college timetables, including rotating schedules, and tracks assignments, exams and grades. Structured is better for students who want to plan every hour of the day rather than every class. Easy Study suits students preparing for one big exam with many subjects.

Is Quizlet still free?

Quizlet is free to download and create sets, and sells Quizlet Plus as a monthly or annual subscription. The listing does not say which study modes are limited without Plus. Its privacy label declares tracking across 7 data types, so compare it with the options on our Quizlet alternatives page.
