Our verdict

The Phonics App suits parents who want a quiet way to teach reading without points and rewards, and the free section is enough to try the method. Families who want a game-like app or American pronunciation should look at other reading apps.

What The Phonics App is

The Phonics App teaches reading with systematic phonics. A child taps a word to hear the sounds it is made of, with a dot under each sound, and video guidance from a phonics teacher leads each step. Lessons cover the a-z sounds, blending, the remaining sounds of English, capital letters and common tricky words, with informal checks at the end of each section. The developer says it was made with Miss Mabel, founder of the Reading Roots community, and designed without collectibles, coins or dopamine rewards.

Strengths

  • Video guidance from a phonics teacher at every step.
  • The privacy label says no data is collected.
  • Clear, low prices with the billing period in each item name.

Limits

  • The description says sounds are pronounced with an English accent, which American families should know.
  • The other sounds and 400+ practice words need a subscription.
  • New (released March 2025) with about 230 ratings, and last updated in June 2026.
  • No storybook library is described; it focuses on sounds and words.
