Our verdict

Simply Piano is a strong first app for anyone with a keyboard who wants to play recognizable songs quickly and keep a daily routine. Learners who want technique coaching, or who mind tracking, should look at a teacher or another app.

What Simply Piano is

Simply Piano, from Simply, teaches piano by listening to you play. You place an iPhone or iPad on an acoustic or MIDI piano or keyboard, and the description says the app recognizes the notes and gives instant feedback. Courses move from reading sheet music to playing with both hands, songs can be slowed down, and personalized 5-minute workouts target weak spots. Touch Courses turn the screen into a keyboard if you have no instrument.

Who it suits

  • Beginners who own a piano or keyboard
  • Adults and kids who want to learn through popular songs

Strengths

  • Listens to a real acoustic or digital piano, so you practice on the instrument itself, according to the description
  • Structured courses from sheet music basics to two-handed playing, plus a song library you can slow down
  • Apple Editors' Choice, rated 4.7 from about 861,000 ratings, updated in October 2026
  • Interface in 14 languages, and Touch Courses for learners without an instrument yet

Limits

  • Only two courses are free; every other course needs Premium, according to the description
  • The privacy label declares identifiers used for tracking and links seven data types to you, including contact info and search history
  • The price list has nine overlapping items (Individual, Family, 3-month and 12-month plans) that the listing does not explain
  • Feedback comes from the app hearing notes, not from a teacher watching hand position or posture

What the free version does

The description says all users can play two free courses. Everything else, including the full course catalog and the monthly new songs, is reserved for subscribers.
