Our verdict

LingoDeer is one of the best choices for learning Korean, Japanese or Chinese with grammar explained from the first lesson. Learners who only want free practice, or who need conversation lessons in a language outside the five Fluent courses, should look elsewhere.

What LingoDeer is

LingoDeer is a course app for 20 languages that puts Asian languages first, including Korean, Japanese and Chinese. The developer says its short lessons are written by language teachers, with grammar tips inside each lesson and studio-recorded audio from native speakers. Courses start from the alphabet, and a Character Drill adds writing practice for Japanese kanji and Chinese characters.

Who it suits

  • Learners of Korean, Japanese or Chinese who want grammar explained
  • Beginners who want a structured course from the alphabet up
  • People learning several languages on one plan

Strengths

  • Clear course path with grammar tips inside lessons, according to the description.
  • Script practice for Asian languages: hiragana tracing and a Character Drill for kanji and Chinese characters.
  • Lessons work offline.
  • Recent updates added more spaced repetition modes and "Tell Me Why" mistake explanations.
  • One Multilingual Pass covers all 20 courses, with lifetime options on the price list.

Limits

  • A subscription is needed for full access, and the listing does not say how much is free.
  • The Fluent conversation lessons exist only for Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Spanish and French.
  • There is no single-language plan on the price list.
  • Identifiers are declared for tracking, and it has about 28,100 ratings, far fewer than the biggest language apps.

What the free version does

The description says a subscription is needed for full access to all courses and features. It does not say which lessons stay free.
