Our verdict
Kanji Study suits learners past the kana stage who want to read and write kanji for the JLPT and prefer paying once. Pair it with a grammar app, and start elsewhere if you have not learned hiragana yet.
What Kanji Study is
Kanji Study, from Luli Languages, teaches kanji through the vocabulary words they appear in rather than as isolated characters. The developer says it covers over 5,000 JLPT words from N5 to N1, with writing lessons that check your strokes, spaced repetition reviews in both directions, audio for every word, and full offline use.
Who it suits
- Learning kanji
- JLPT preparation from N5 to N1
- Learners who prefer one-time purchases to a subscription
Strengths
- Writing lessons detect your strokes and give instant feedback on stroke order.
- Reviews run English to Japanese and Japanese to English, including writing quizzes.
- Content is sold by level as one-time purchases rather than a subscription.
- Works offline, and the privacy label declares no tracking and no data linked to you.
Limits
- It requires iOS 17.5 or later.
- It teaches kanji and vocabulary only, with no grammar course.
- Buying Levels 1 to 5 one by one costs $67 in total, against $29.99 for the All Levels bundle.
- The listing does not say how much you can study before paying.
What the free version does
The app is free to download, but the listing does not say how much content is free. Each JLPT-based level is unlocked by its own purchase.
