Our verdict

Jolly Phonics suits parents whose child learns with Jolly Phonics at school, or who want a proven phonics sequence at home. Parents who want an app with no ads or store links, or one that goes beyond early phonics, should compare other reading apps.

What Jolly Phonics is

Jolly Phonics is the app version of a synthetic phonics program developed by teachers Sue Lloyd and Sara Wernham. It teaches the 42 letter sounds in groups, and each sound lesson pairs a short story with a hand action, as in the classroom version. Songs, flashcards, games, handwriting animations and progress checks support each lesson.

Who it suits

  • Families whose school uses Jolly Phonics
  • Parents teaching letter sounds to young children at home

Strengths

  • Follows a systematic synthetic phonics method used in schools, so home practice can match the classroom.
  • Multi-sensory lessons: stories, actions, songs, games and step-by-step handwriting animations.
  • Built-in assessments track a child's progress.
  • The latest update added 30 decodable Folktales readers and an in-app Teacher's Guide.
  • Content can be bought once in pieces or all together, without a subscription.

Limits

  • The App Store age rating says the app contains advertising.
  • The latest update added an in-app browser of products from the Jolly Learning web store.
  • Content is sold in several separate items, which makes the full cost less obvious at first.
  • The interface is English only and uses British wording, such as "programme".

What the free version does

The description says songs and audio for all 42 letter sounds are free. The price list sells Sound Groups 2 to 7, tricky words, alternatives, sounding and writing separately, so most lessons beyond the first group appear to need a purchase.

Price

On the US App Store in November 2026, the price list includes Full access (monthly) at $4.99, Unlock Everything at $9.99 and Sound Groups 2 to 7 at $7.99. Tricky Words, Alternatives and Sounding are $1.99 each, and Writing is $0.99.
