Our verdict
Pick flowkey if you want to play specific pieces and like being told, note by note, whether you got them right. If you want a theory-first course or care about tracking, look at a more structured or more private option.
What flowkey is
flowkey teaches piano through songs arranged by professional pianists, in four difficulty levels, plus courses on reading sheet music, playing with both hands, scales, chords and improvisation. It listens through the microphone or connects over Bluetooth or MIDI, and its Wait Mode pauses until you play the right notes. You can loop a section, practice one hand at a time, or watch a video of a pianist with the next notes highlighted on the keyboard.
Who it suits
- Learning songs on piano
- Beginners who want feedback on each note
- Players with an acoustic or digital piano at home
Strengths
- Practice tools built for songs: loop a section, pick one hand, Wait Mode and a Just Play mode that follows you through the whole piece.
- Works with acoustic pianos through the microphone and with digital pianos over Bluetooth or MIDI, according to the listing.
- A family option is listed, and the description says it covers up to 5 people.
- Updated in November 2026, available in 11 app languages, rated 4.7 from about 66,000 ratings.
Limits
- The privacy label declares purchases, contact info and identifiers as data used to track you.
- The free selection is limited to some beginner lessons and classical songs, according to the description.
- The description says flowkey Classic covers classical and non-copyrighted songs only; the full Premium library is described but no Premium item appears in the US price list.
- The method leans on songs more than on structured music theory.
What the free version does
The description says a limited selection of beginner lessons and classical songs is free to learn. The full library and all courses need a subscription, and the description says the yearly plan starts with a 7-day free trial.
