Our verdict
ChessKid is the pick for parents who want children to learn chess in a safe, ad-free app with parental controls. Teens and adults, or kids who want unlimited puzzles without paying, should look at other chess apps.
What ChessKid is
ChessKid, listed as Chess for Kids, is Chess.com's chess app for children, schools and coaches. Kids can play games online or offline against friends, other kids or 10 cartoon bots, follow kid-friendly lessons and videos, and solve puzzles from a pool of over 350,000. A recent update added Puzzle Worlds, where solving puzzles unlocks themed destinations.
Who it suits
- Children learning chess
- Parents and coaches who want a kid-safe chess app
Strengths
- Playing games is free and unlimited, according to the description.
- Ad-free, per the description, with parental controls: kids can chat in games only with their parents and cannot add friends without permission.
- Ten bots for different levels and kid-friendly video lessons.
- No tracking and no data linked to you on the privacy label.
- Rated 4.7 from about 102,100 ratings, with 28 app languages.
Limits
- Free users can solve only three puzzles a day.
- Puzzles and videos are unlimited only for Gold members.
- The monthly price is high next to the yearly one, and the 6-month item costs less than the 3-month item.
- The cartoon style will not suit teens or adults.
What the free version does
The description says games are free and unlimited, but free users can solve up to three puzzles a day. Unlimited puzzles and videos need a Gold membership.
