Our verdict

This is a good pick for beginners and casual players who want to learn by playing with hints, offline and in private, for a small price. If you want to play other people online or follow puzzle courses, use a larger chess platform alongside it.

What Chess without ads is

Chess without ads, from the developer of Chess Tiger, teaches chess by playing against the computer with a coach at your side. Beginners start with short introductory lessons, then play real games while the coach shows four to six strong moves, warns about dangerous moves and explains illegal ones. After each game it reviews your good and bad moves. The description says there are no ads, no account and no internet needed.

Who it suits

  • Playing and learning offline
  • Beginners who want guided games

Strengths

  • The first 40 introductory lessons are free, according to the description.
  • Move suggestions, threat warnings and a post-game analysis, as the screenshots show.
  • Works offline, with no account and no ads.
  • No data collected, according to the privacy label.
  • Many trainer levels, USCF and FIDE rating scales, and an engine the developer rates at 3040 USCF Elo.

Limits

  • Games are against the computer; the description does not describe online play against people.
  • The screenshots show a dated, skeuomorphic look.
  • The listing does not say exactly what PRO unlocks beyond the free lessons.
  • The price list mixes short PRO passes, lifetime PRO and a separate "Learn chess" item.

What the free version does

The app is free to download, has no ads, and the description says the first 40 lessons are free. The listing does not list the full set of features reserved for PRO.
